A child's name on their bedroom is one of the first things that makes a room theirs. It is also one of the first things a new baby's room gets, usually before the baby does.
Our decorated name sign is a freestanding sign with the name in raised 3D letters, decorated with a theme the child likes. Here is what it is, how to choose the decoration, and where it works best.
What it is
- About 20 cm wide, 17 cm high and 4 cm deep
- Freestanding, so it sits on a shelf, a dresser or a windowsill with no wall mounting
- One colour of your choice
- $40
The decorations to choose from are stars, clouds, hot air balloons, butterflies, flowers, hearts and dinosaurs. If none of those is right, choose "something else" and tell us the idea in the notes. A child who is very sure about sharks, or rainbows, or trains, will be more pleased with their own theme than with the nearest one on the list.
Choosing the decoration
Ask the child, if they are old enough to have an opinion. They usually are, earlier than you would expect.
For a nursery, it is the parents' room as much as the baby's, so choose for the room: clouds or stars for a calm room, hot air balloons or butterflies for a brighter one. For a baby shower present, when you do not know the room, stars or clouds are the safest choices because they go with almost anything.
Dinosaurs and flowers are more particular. They suit a child who already loves them, and they are a big hit when they match.
Choosing the colour
The sign is one colour, so pick one that stands out against where it will sit. A white sign on a white shelf disappears. A white sign on a dark wooden dresser looks crisp. If you do not know the room, ask the parent, or pick a colour that matches the child's favourite rather than the furniture.
Where it works
- A bedroom shelf or dresser, at a child's eye level, where they can see their own name.
- A nursery, on the change table shelf or the top of a drawer unit.
- Birthday tables and photo props. A name sign in the middle of a first birthday cake table appears in every photo of the day, and it goes back to the bedroom afterwards.
- Baby showers, as a present, or as decoration for the shower that becomes a present at the end.
Names and spelling
Use the full name the family uses. Check the spelling with the parents, especially for a baby whose name you have only heard said aloud. The name is part of the printed piece, so it cannot be fixed afterwards.
The sign is about 20 cm wide, so a long name has less room per letter than a short one. If the name is long, or you have a question about how it will look, put it in the notes box on the order.
If there is anything else we should know, like a theme that needs explaining or a date the sign is needed by, the notes box is the place for that too.
When it isn't the right thing
If you want something on the door or the wall, this is the wrong sign. It is designed to stand up on its own rather than hang.
And for a teenager, a decorated name sign may feel young. A desk organiser with their name in their own colours tends to land better at that age.
Timing
Each sign is made to order in Auckland: 0 to 2 working days to make, then 1 to 3 working days to arrive once posted. Postage is worked out in your cart, and you can collect in Auckland for free. If the sign is for a birthday or a shower on a fixed date, order with time to spare and check the delivery page.
For Christmas presents, order by 16 December.
